Attentional Capture and Ethical Responsibility in Theravāda Abhidhamma: A Formal Reconstruction of the Cognitive Sequence

In Theravāda Abhidhamma, the cognitive sequence (citta-vīthi) describes how moments of consciousness process objects, but standard accounts leave unclear how competing or overlapping objects are resolved given the system's timing constraints. This paper introduces a typology of attentional capture based on four object-intensity categories: uninterrupted capture, delayed capture, weak capture, and mind-door capture. Using a formal reconstruction constrained by the one-consciousness-at-a-time rule and the seventeen-moment material lifespan, it examines how attention is captured, delayed, or blocked under different conditions.

Ayutthayan Protective Practices and Devices: Manual of Wat Pradusongtham

An eighteenth-century manual from Wat Pradusongtham, a late Ayutthaya meditation center, describes protective diagrams called Triple Gem Qualities yantras, which represent the qualities of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha, along with the Ratanamālā protective chant. It also provides instructions for visualizing four Pali syllables—na, ma, a, and u—that stand for four precious gems and the four elements (dhātu) composing the body and physical world. Adepts use these gems to manipulate natural forces, cure illnesses, perform miraculous powers, and activate protective devices.
