Severe Solar Maculopathy Associated with the use of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)

American Journal of Ophthalmology April 1, 1976 Dwain Fuller 52 citations

A 23-year-old man suffered severe damage to the macula, the central part of the retina, after staring at the sun while under the influence of a hallucinogenic drug. Repeated imaging of the back of the eye, including fundus photography and fluorescein angiography, showed clear injury concentrated in the retinal pigment epithelium, a key layer that supports the retina's light-sensing cells.
