Nitric oxide synthase inhibitors produce phencyclidine-like behavioral effects in pigeons.

Brain Research April 9, 1996 D C Jewett, E R Butelman, J H Woods

The present study assessed the ability of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors to produce PCP-like behavioral effects in pigeons. Food-restricted pigeons were trained to discriminate between PCP (1.0 mg/kg, i.m.) from saline in a two-key operant procedure. NOS inhibitors 7-nitroindazole (7-NI) and N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) produced PCP-like discriminative stimulus...

Stereospecific binding of 3H-phencyclidine in brain membranes.

Life Sciences June 21, 1982 R Y Hampton, F Medzihradsky, J H Woods et al.

Phencyclidine (PCP) displaceable binding of 3H-PCP to glass-fiber filters was eliminated and total binding markedly reduced by initial treatment of the discs with 0.05% polyethyleneimine. Assessed with treated filters, unlabeled PCP displaced 3H-PCP in both rat and pigeon brain membranes with an EC50 of 1 microM. Of similar high inhibitory potency were dextrorphan, levorphanol, SKF 10047 and...
