Cerebellar toxicity of phencyclidine

Journal of Neuroscience March 1, 1995 Riitta Näkki, Jari Koıstınaho, FR Sharp et al. 68 citations

Phencyclidine (PCP), dizocilpine maleate (MK801), and other NMDA antagonists are toxic to neurons in the posterior cingulate and retrosplenial cortex. To determine if additional neurons are damaged, the distribution of microglial activation and 70 kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) induction was studied following the administration of PCP and MK801 to rats. PCP (10-50 mg/kg) induced microglial...

Haloperidol prevents induction of the hsp70 heat shock gene in neurons injured by phencyclidine (PCP), MK801, and ketamine

Journal of Neuroscience Research December 1, 1992 F. R. Sharp, M. Butman, S. Wang et al.

AbstractThe non‐competitive NMDA receptor antagonists, PCP (phencyclidine), MK801, and ketamine produce psychosis in humans and abnormal vacuoles in posterior cingulate and retrosplenial rat cortical neurons. We show that PCP (≥5 mg/kg), MK801 (≥0.1 mg/kg), and ketamine (>20 mg/kg) induce hsp70 mRNA and HSP70 heat shock protein in these vacuolated, injured neurons, and PCP also induces hsp70 in...
