Transpersonal psychology, the psychology of the future

March 16, 2026 Claudio Maddaloni

The author argues that modern psychiatry and psychology have been impoverished by excluding spiritual, energetic, and transformative dimensions of human experience. Transpersonal Psychology (TPP) is presented as a corrective, integrating Eastern traditions (Hinduism, Buddhism, yoga, alchemy) with Western thinkers (Jung, Assagioli, Grof) to restore value to non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSC) such as ecstasy and oceanic consciousness, which are reframed as evolutionary stages toward unified awareness. The chapter distinguishes psychotic crises from spiritual emergencies and maps psychic structures across historical stages (archaic through transpersonal), concluding with Wilber's four-quadrant model to advocate for therapeutic interventions addressing all facets of experience.
