The Efficacy of the Mobile Application-Based Mindfulness Mediation on Adjustment of College Students in Hong Kong: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Learning Environment and Design January 1, 2020 Raymond Chi Fai Chui, Nicolson Yat-Fan Siu, Wai-Man Tsui et al.

A 21-day mobile-based randomized controlled trial with Hong Kong college students found that a mindfulness intervention produced a small positive effect on college adjustment but no statistically significant effect on stress or mindfulness compared to a control group listening to classical music. Following app instructions was positively associated with mindfulness and adjustment. The authors conclude that mobile mindfulness interventions without instructor or therapist support generate only limited benefits, and that lack of motivation in self-guided well-being apps may discourage regular engagement and fail to produce substantial positive outcomes.
