Life after death and mind beyond the brain: Reflections and implications for aging.

International Psychogeriatrics March 1, 2026 Marianna Abreu Costa, Alexander Moreira-Almeida

As the global population ages, older adults more frequently report non-ordinary experiences including end-of-life experiences, after-death communications, and near-death experiences. This commentary highlights the high prevalence of these phenomena in late life and reviews available evidence. It argues that dying and aging should not be seen as mere decline but as a potentially transformative stage rich with meaning and connection, and calls for openness to non-physicalist perspectives in understanding these experiences.
