Considerations for sociocultural adaptations of a mindfulness-based program within a low socioeconomic setting in Cape Town, South Africa

BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies December 30, 2025 Sarah Foale, Soraya Seedat, Tanya Heyns

Stakeholders in Cape Town, South Africa agreed that mindfulness-based programs can be adapted to be feasible, acceptable, and accessible for participants in low socioeconomic settings. Key adaptations include strategies to encourage attendance and retention, program structure and content, trauma sensitivity, facilitator qualities and training, communication strategies, language use, and translation approaches. The findings suggest that appropriately and sensitively adapted programs may benefit participants in low-resource and high-risk trauma environments, though further research is needed on the specifics of how, where, and when to offer them.
