Mindfulness-based interventions to support wellbeing of adults in low socio-economic settings: a realist review

BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies January 29, 2024 Sarah Foale, Yvonne Botma, Tanya Heyns

A realist review examined mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for adults in low socio-economic settings, finding scant research: only 12 of 112 identified documents met inclusion criteria, with 10 conducted in the United States. The review identified mechanisms yielding beneficial outcomes across contexts and indications for adapting interventions to improve accessibility, acceptability, and feasibility. The authors developed a program theory for implementing socio-culturally adapted MBIs in such settings, which could be tested to promote wellbeing. The review highlights the need for more research globally and offers guidance for future intervention design.
