Differential Effects of Mindful Breathing and Loving-Kindness Meditation Exercises on College Students' Mental Health
June 18, 2018 Sarah J. Bolognino
A two-week randomized controlled trial compared mindful breathing meditation, loving-kindness meditation, a combination of both, and relaxation exercises, each practiced daily for 10 minutes via audio. All conditions produced statistically significant improvements over time. Mindful breathing and loving-kindness meditation showed larger therapeutic effects than the combined or relaxation conditions, with effect sizes ranging from small to large. Changes in process variables—such as social connectedness, cognitive fusion, and compassion—predicted changes in anxiety, depression, and well-being. Treatment acceptability predicted changes in depression, though previous meditation experience and treatment integrity did not differ between groups.
