Application of mindfulness-based interventions – MBCT and MBSR – in depression treatment and relapse prevention

Quality in Sport April 25, 2024 Julia Szymonik, Sebastian Szopa

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) show promising potential for managing depression and preventing relapses. These interventions, which focus on present-moment awareness and acceptance, also reduce anxiety, emotional exhaustion, stress, and psychological distress while improving coping with rumination, memory disturbances, and emotional regulation. The paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of MBCT and MBSR's effectiveness, noting that they target depression's mechanisms and cultivate coping strategies and resilience. However, additional randomized, large-scale, placebo-controlled trials are needed to confirm these encouraging results.
