Artificial intelligences and the problem of consciousness

PAAKAT: Revista de Tecnología y Sociedad February 28, 2019 Alexandre Quaresma

Consciousness presupposes life and can only be attributed to living systems, not to artificial intelligence systems such as computers, androids, or robots. The paper examines the nature of consciousness in the biological world and the conditions required for its attribution, comparing organic states of consciousness with artificial cybernetic information processing systems. It critically evaluates claims from orthodox cognitive scientists and advocates of strong AI regarding machine consciousness, building on the author's previous work on the limits of computation and intentionality in artificial intelligences.
