A framework for designing compassionate and ethical artificial intelligence and artificial consciousness

The authors propose design principles and a computational framework for building artificial intelligence that is conscious, empathetic, and compassionate. They argue that consciousness, intelligence, and empathy can be engineered into machines, and that doing so could shift public discussion away from fear of AI toward embedding cherished human values in technology. Emergent rules of computation in the Universe lead to life and consciousness: a computational framework for consciousness

A new computational framework proposes that consciousness is an emergent property of any universe capable of processing information. The authors hypothesize that physical laws encode rules that allow life and conscious organisms to arise wherever there is a substrate for computation and energy. They suggest consciousness exists at multiple levels, from atoms to galaxies, and introduce a metric of complexity that quantifies consciousness by measuring both the amount of information and the ability to process it.
