Ernest Hemingway's suicide at age 61 resulted from accumulated physical deterioration, emotional distress, and cognitive decline. His life was burdened by possible borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, multiple head traumas, alcoholism, and hemochromatosis. A war wound in 1918 produced a near-death experience with out-of-body sensations and paradoxical analgesia that influenced his later writing. The constant presence of danger, death, and violence in his works, along with his 'code hero' archetype, can be traced to his psychological and neurological disorders and early brush with death.
