Abstract

Where Do We Go When We Fall Asleep? — On the Boundaries of Reality Shaped by the Five Senses is a philosophical and speculative essay that reconsiders the conventional distinction between dreams and reality. The essay begins with a simple question: Why do we regard only the world experienced while awake as reality? It proposes that the five senses may function not only as windows onto reality, but also as constraints that stabilize human experience by anchoring consciousness to three coordinates: “here, now, and self.” From this perspective, dreaming is explored not simply as the opposite of reality, but as a mode of experience in which these ordinary sensory and cognitive constraints become less stable. The essay distinguishes the reality of an experience from the external physical reality of what is experienced, while asking whether conscious experience must necessarily be confined to the boundaries established during wakefulness. From this central question, the discussion expands into a series of thought experiments involving altered experiences of space, time, and self; precognitive dreams; block-universe and possible-future perspectives; shamanic trance and meditation; and, at its most speculative boundary, the possibility that different modes of conscious reality might overlap. Quantum mechanics is not presented as an explanation or proof of these ideas. Rather, concepts such as observation, state, and possibility serve only as conceptual inspiration for asking how different conditions of observation might correspond to different descriptions or experiences of reality. The essay does not claim to establish a scientific theory of dreams or consciousness. Its purpose is instead to examine a more fundamental epistemological question: Are the boundaries of what we call reality the boundaries of reality itself, or the boundaries of the conditions under which human beings are able to experience it?
