Abstract

Consciousness science is at a crossroads, with competing theories, fragmented methodologies, and unresolved foundational questions. In response, we argue for a transdisciplinary approach that moves beyond traditional academic boundaries and integrates perspectives within and beyond the scientific community. By involving diverse stakeholders, such as policymakers, practitioners, and community members, transdisciplinary research offers an integrative framework capable of addressing the complexities of consciousness (e.g. measurements of consciousness, synthetic consciousness, and patient recovery from minimal states of consciousness, among many others). This paper examines the current challenges in consciousness science. It proposes collaboration across sectors—linking neuroscience, social sciences, philosophy, and real-world actors—can generate more comprehensive, socially relevant, and scientifically robust solutions. We discuss practical examples of ongoing transdisciplinary interventions and offer tools for fostering collaboration that embraces the richness of human experience while advancing the field beyond its current paradigmatic constraints.
