Key findings Breath-focused meditation (Form 2) was reported to be more efficient for long-term relaxation than single-point-focused meditation (Form 1). Significant variations in five EEG frequency bands were observed across three phases, with characteristic changes in the frontal brain region used to identify meditation.

Abstract

Research has demonstrated that meditation boosts people’s mental and physical wellness. Response to meditation is a subjective phenomenon. The EEG signal offers profound insight into the underlying alterations in brain activity in response to various meditative forms. This study aims to find out the effect of mediation on relaxation and the longevity of relaxation caused by meditation based on two different mediation forms by analyzing frequency domain features of EEG signals. In the case of form 1, subjects had to focus on a single point on the wall while for form 2, subjects had to focus on their breathing. Non-meditators were selected in this study. Characteristic change in the frontal region of the brain was used for recognizing mediation. Significant variations in five frequency bands were observed in three phases for understanding the meditation effect. Form 2 proved to efficient for long-term relaxation than Form 1.
