Abstract

Rather than proceed with a typical presentation of well-trodden ground and having attempted to corner the subject of interest, this attempt to unmask the subject reveals (with deference to Mystery Inc.) that there was no ghoul, nor ghost, nor any such ethereal thing beneath the grotesque mask. Indeed, the hard problem of consciousness dissolves when we recognize that phenomenal experience is the native output format of an evolved biological integration protocol, and that the unified subject assumed to receive that output is itself a coordination artifact selected for response latency rather than epistemic accuracy. To elucidate this end, this paper advances three interconnected (aptly named) arguments: the detector argument, the integration protocol argument, and the Byzantine consensus argument. First, consider the detector argument: every measurement system outputs data in its own native format, and the brain-body system is no exception. It evolved to output feeling-type signals rather than propositional reports or electromagnetic spectra, and demanding an explanation of why it feels like something to be a brain commits the same category error as asking why an infrared spectrum does not resemble an ultraviolet one. The detector argument is grounded evolutionarily: the brain-body system was not selected to measure the physical properties of stimuli but to generate fast, contextually integrated, action-relevant discriminations between survival-relevant categories. The phenomenal character of red, for example, is not a representation of 700nm electromagnetic radiation. We further argue that standard objections to physicalist accounts of consciousness (i.e. the qualia objection, Nagel’s bat, the zombie argument, Jackson’s Mary’s room, and the self-undermining objection) all dissolve under the detector framework. The treatment of Mary’s room is developed in particular depth and, importantly, is made consistent with a literal reading of the orthogonal projection thesis: we do not claim that complete description yields phenomenal acquaintance. We show that the knowledge argument’s completeness premise generates a dilemma: if complete physical knowledge excludes the experiential mapping from brain-body states to phenomenal outputs, the premise is false; if it includes the mapping, the residue Mary gains on release is not a new fact but the instantiation of a physical state her prior epistemic position could fully describe yet not realize. Central to the dissolution is a corrected spectroscopic analysis distinguishing two senses of orthogonality: measurement-orthogonality (IR and UV spectra are noninterconvertible projections of one molecular Hamiltonian) and description-instantiation orthogonality (knowing the complete description of a measurement is a distinct physical event from running the instrument).
