Abstract The chapter explores the concept of compound consciousness by using ‘cringe’ as a contemporary example. It outlines how complex experiences like cringe unify emotion, perception, and internal sensations. The author introduces the Neural Binding and Coherence (NBC) theory, which uses neural representation, binding, and coherence, to explain diverse conscious phenomena. These mechanisms form the metaphorical rungs on the ladder to consciousness, connecting biological foundations to abstract thought. The chapter introduces the four types of consciousness—external perceptions, internal sensations, emotions, and abstract thought—and discusses their integration in compound experiences. It highlights the scientific approach, contrasts it with alternatives, and sets the stage for applying NBC to domains like dreams, emotions, and cultural phenomena. This theory aims to illuminate the richness and mechanisms of conscious experience.
