Summary

AI-generated from the abstract

Yoga, which combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation, is considered a promising complementary approach for supporting psychological well-being and rehabilitation. The review suggests that yoga practices may contribute to reducing stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, and to improving self-awareness, emotional regulation, sleep quality, and quality of life. In rehabilitation, yoga may help improve physical functions, manage pain, and support psychosocial well-being in neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and oncological contexts. Proposed mechanisms include autonomic nervous system regulation, stress response modulation, and neuroplasticity. However, the authors note that methodological differences across studies exist and that higher-quality research is needed to confirm clinical efficacy.

Abstract

Yoga is a body-mind based approach that combines physical postures, controlled breathing techniques, and meditation practices. With the increasing interest in complementary and integrative health practices in recent years, yoga stands out as a supportive intervention method in psychological well-being and rehabilitation processes. Literature findings indicate that yoga practices can contribute to reducing stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms; and supporting self-awareness, emotional regulation, sleep quality, and quality of life. In the field of rehabilitation, yoga is noteworthy for its role in improving physical functions, managing pain, and supporting psychosocial well-being in neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and oncological rehabilitation processes. It is thought that the effects of yoga may manifest through mechanisms related to autonomic nervous system regulation, modulation of the stress response, and neuroplasticity. However, there are methodological differences in intervention protocols and evaluation methods in existing studies. In conclusion, yoga is considered a promising complementary approach in supporting psychological well-being and rehabilitation processes. However, studies of high methodological quality are needed to more clearly demonstrate its clinical efficacy. Keywords: Yoga, mind-body practices, psychological well-being, rehabilitation
