Abstract This discussion paper argues that brain–computer interface (BCI) technology provides empirical evidence for substrate-independent consciousness. Examining ordinary speech reveals consciousness already traverses non-conscious media (air) while preserving embodied experience, suggesting substrate transfer is fundamental to consciousness rather than exceptional.
