Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī: Mystic of Fractal Consciousness

Abstract

This article investigates the theoretical foundations of fractality as a cross-disciplinary concept bridging philosophy, aesthetics, and cognitive science. The primary aim is to explore how fractal models originally developed in mathematics by Benoît Mandelbrot can illuminate the structure of thought, consciousness, and cultural texts. Fractality is understood not only as a geometric property but as an epistemological and aesthetic principle grounded in self-similarity, nonlinearity, and recursive organization. Methodologically, the study integrates conceptual analysis, cognitive hermeneutics, and literary close reading, focusing on Sūfī mysticism and the poetic works of Jalal al- Din Rūmī. Texts such as the Mathnawī and the Diwān of Shams al-Dīn Tabrīzī are analyzed as fractal systems where symbolic motifs, narrative forms, and spiritual insights unfold through recursive repetition and metaphorical layering. The article argues that Sūfī epistemology represents a form of fractal cognition: spiritual knowledge arises not linearly but through cyclical, reflective engagement. This has broader implications for the study of mystical texts, nonlinear poetics, and the cognitive basis of religious experience. The findings are relevant to scholars in philosophy of mind, literary studies, Islamic mysticism, and cognitive poetics, offering new tools for analyzing how meaning and consciousness emerge through complex, interconnected systems of representation.
