Abstract
Background: Older adults often face challenges such as bereavement, reduced income and loss of purpose after retirement. Despite their societal contributions, exposure to ageism can adversely affect their mental health. According to WHO, around 14% of adults aged 60 and above live with a mental issues like depression, anxiety and stress. Mantras are considered effective for addressing mental health challenges. The existence of AUM before the Vedic Kala is evidenced during the Indus-Saraswati civilization. Mantras effectively support mental health and have held a prominent place in culture and rituals since the Vedic Kala. Ancient seers have historically practiced Mantra Yoga for spiritual enlightenment. Aumkara Mantra, also known as Pranava, Udageetha and Brahma, is highly regarded for its use in meditation and spiritual practices, exerting significant effects on physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being. Objective: To elaborate the scientific review of Aumkara Mantra chanting and their effect on mental well-being in older adults. Methods: various databases were systematically searched and reviewed. Results: Total 23 studies have been done and registered on Aumkara Mantra meditation till date. Among these, four clinical studies focused on mental health in geriatric adults and showed that Aumkara Mantra chanting decreases stress levels by improving score in Geriatric anxiety scale, Perceived stress scale and PSQI scale reducing psychological distress and more. Conclusion: Aumkara Mantra is a non-invasive and cost-effective Yogic spiritual practice to promote mental health. Various studies support that it is effective in decreasing stress levels, improves sleep qualities and enhancing the QOL.
