Summary

AI-generated from the abstract

The New Age Movement (NAM) is a modern spiritual phenomenon promoting self-development, non-religious spirituality, consciousness science, and holistic health. Analyzing Randall Baer's Inside the New Age through Islamic epistemology, the study finds that NAM's epistemology is subjective: it rejects revelation as a source of knowledge and instead elevates inner experience as the absolute truth. It promotes pantheism, monism, and self-deification, which contradict Islamic principles of tawhid, revelation, and the hierarchy of knowledge. According to Al-Attas, this represents an epistemological crisis and loss of adab, placing humans as the center of truth and denying God as the absolute source of knowledge. The movement's foundations cannot be Islamized and fundamentally conflict with Islamic creed and worldview, addressing challenges of modern spirituality for the Muslim community in Malaysia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the New Age Movement (NAM) from the perspective of Islamic epistemology by using Randall Baer’s work Inside the New Age (1989) as the primary source of analysis. The movement represents a modern spiritual phenomenon that has expanded widely in contemporary society, particularly through discourses on self-development, non-religious spirituality, consciousness science, and holistic health. This study adopts a qualitative approach that focuses on critical textual content analysis of the internal experiences disclosed by Randall Baer as a former key leader of the movement. The focus of the study is to identify its epistemological foundations, such as concepts of sources of knowledge and authority of truth, as well as other related themes, by comparing them with the framework of Islamic epistemology grounded in tawhid, revelation (wahy), reason guided by revelation, and the hierarchy of knowledge. The findings of the study indicate that the epistemology of the New Age Movement is subjective in nature, rejecting revelation as a source of knowledge while elevating inner experience as an absolute source of truth. It also promotes notions of pantheism, monism, and self-deification when examined against evidence from classical and contemporary Islamic scholars. In addition, the movement reflects an epistemological crisis and a loss of adab as described by Al-Attas, wherein humans are positioned as the centre of truth and the absolute source of knowledge from God is denied. This worldview cannot be Islamized because its foundations fundamentally contradict the principles of Islamic creed (aqidah) and the Islamic worldview. Therefore, this study is able to refute the fundamental basis of NAM spirituality, namely subjective mystical experience, the rejection of the authority of revelation, and the construction of spirituality through speculation and religious innovation, thereby addressing the challenges of modern spirituality within the context of the Muslim community in Malaysia.
