The incarnate Logos and manunggaling kawulo Gusti

Javanese spirituality's concept of Manunggaling Kawulo Gusti, an aspiration for ontological union with the Divine, is examined through a theological framework centered on the incarnation of the Logos and the doctrine of Theosis. The analysis, based on a critical literature review of primary theological sources, biblical exegesis, and Javanese cultural anthropology, shows that this aspiration is expressed through ascetic practice (laku), contemplative silence (suwung), and cosmic harmony (memayu hayuning bawana). The Logos incarnate, as the union of God and humanity in Christ, provides a standard for re-examining these Javanese spiritual aspirations. Theosis is proposed as a conceptual link, suggesting that the incarnation facilitates humanity's transformation and participation in divine life, with the Holy Spirit as the agent of incarnation and Christification.
