Perinatal anxiety and depression are common and can harm mother and infant health. Because psychotropic medication carries risks during pregnancy and breastfeeding, non-pharmacological support is important. This review analyzed 16 studies published between January 2016 and April 2021, drawn from an initial 18,250 publications, examining mindfulness-based programs. Results indicate that eight-week mindfulness-based programs reduce perceived stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and postpartum depression in pregnant women. These programs also increase mindfulness and self-compassion levels. Mindfulness-based practices appear effective for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression during the perinatal period while enhancing mindfulness.
