Phenomenology in nursing studies: New perspectives.

This article defends the use of phenomenology in nursing research against persistent criticism, particularly from John Paley. The authors argue that Paley and many nursing scholars overlook a rich tradition of applied phenomenology dating back to the early 20th century, which has seen a revival in the last 20-25 years. They present Paley's criticism, then discuss overlooked applications of phenomenology in handling, analyzing, and obtaining data, including special interview techniques. They consider classical phenomenological psychology and psychiatry, recent developments in cognitive science, and three concrete cases involving patients with schizophrenia, cerebral palsy, and hemispatial neglect. The main message encourages qualitative researchers to draw inspiration from phenomenology applied outside qualitative research, such as in classical phenomenological psychology, psychiatry, and naturalized phenomenology.
