The idea that cognitive processes can extend beyond the brain into material resources, known as cognitive extension, changes how musical consciousness is understood. Drawing on Andy Clark's work on cognitive extension and Edwin Hutchins's distributed cognition, the chapter examines musical examples such as medieval mnemonic devices, musical scores, and instruments. It argues that musical sound itself serves as a medium for extending musical thought into the world, particularly when a musical ensemble functions as a distributed cognitive system.
The chapter argues that understanding collective musical improvisation requires moving beyond conventional information-processing models of cognition. It proposes that 'strange', paradoxical, level-crossing feedback loops better capture the dynamics involved. The text highlights challenges in studying improvisation and consciousness, and suggests that embodied and enactive theories of cognition, along with predictive processing and social psychology, offer productive frameworks. Improvising music together involves joint action, embodied coordination, collective attention, and shared intention in ways that challenge standard views of mind and consciousness.
