Two experiments adapted a latent inhibition (LI) paradigm—normally used to study how attention filters irrelevant stimuli—to test whether a psi (psychic) stimulus might be processed like an irrelevant stimulus. Because creativity and positive schizotypy moderate how irrelevant stimuli are processed, the authors hypothesized these variables would also moderate any psi effect. In Experiment 1, a standard LI effect appeared but no psi effect; however, non-linear cognition in the creative process (e.g., intuition, hypnagogia) was significantly linked to a psi-LI-like effect. In Experiment 2, a significant psi effect emerged that seemed to operate under the same conditions as LI (attenuated by high attentional load), but creativity and positive schizotypy did not moderate its strength. The LI effect was significantly enhanced by non-linear cognition and attenuated by originality.

An analysis of roughly one thousand spontaneous psychic experiences identified four main types: intuitive (a simple, unreasoned hunch), hallucinatory (projected as if a sensation), unrealistic dreaming (characterized by fantasy), and realistic dreaming (photographically realistic imagery). The first two types occurred only in the waking state. These four forms are common in mental life, not unique to psychic experiences, which helps understand the process. The main acquisition of knowledge appears to occur unconsciously, with the conscious form representing a mental mechanism that carries the information across the threshold. Some act of selective judgment is inferred below consciousness.

A registered prospective meta-analysis of ganzfeld extrasensory perception (ESP) studies tested whether participants preselected for creativity, prior psi experience or belief, or mental discipline practice would show above-chance precognition. Using an automated design with randomly selected video clips as targets and decoys, 22 direct hits occurred in 60 trials (37% hit-rate), significantly supporting the precognition task. However, no correlation was found between altered state of consciousness measures and task performance, contrary to the hypothesis that the ganzfeld method induces a psi-conducive state. The authors conclude that further ganzfeld ESP research is justified.

Receptive psi—the ability to receive information through non-ordinary channels—may arise within healthy mind-body-other systems that are open, porous, sensitive, and strongly interconnected. Such systems might also show richer fractal signatures. Syncretic tendencies, including synesthesia, can help bring usually invisible or intangible information into conscious awareness. The presentation discusses several correlates of psi from this perspective.

Magicians report experiencing phenomena such as influencing situations or weather, psychokinesis, ESP, and synchronistic events. Evaluating magical practice is difficult because success depends on the magician's goals, and displacement or trickster effects occur, similar to those in parapsychology. Preconditions for successful magic include motivation, an empathic relationship with the goal, no doubts about effectiveness, and not wanting or suffering too much. Dedicated magicians could aid parapsychologists due to their trained focus and ability to work with altered states of consciousness, though motivation may be a challenge.
