Beliefs about vampire shamans among the indigenous Koryak, Chukchi, and Even peoples of northern Kamchatka are neither a form of false consciousness nor a disguised reference to something else. These beliefs are examined within a broader cultural context encompassing the spirit world, the human soul, and the afterlife. The second half of the article demonstrates how people's ways of speaking about the spiritual world are interwoven with their social realities.
