Dream recall frequency and content in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy

More than 70% of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) recall their dreams, but their dream recall rate is lower than that of healthy controls. Dream recall is not influenced by neuropsychological deficits or seizure frequency. Compared to controls, TLE patients report dreams with a higher percentage of familiar settings and fewer dreams involving success. These findings suggest that mesial and neocortical temporal structures play a role in dream experience, and that selective activation of dysfunctional mesial structures may contribute to variability in dream recall. Dream content changes may also reflect social and psychological comorbidities of epilepsy.

Mescaline‐Spikes and Amino Acids in the Cortex of Cats Pretreated with Caffeine and Pentetrazol

In cats pretreated with nonconvulsant doses of pentetrazol or caffeine, a spiking focus induced by topical mescaline appeared earlier, with more frequent and irregular spikes, and in some caffeine-pretreated animals short spike discharges reminiscent of focal seizures were observed. The mescaline spikes altered free amino acid levels throughout the neocortex differently in pretreated versus untreated animals. Glycine increased significantly with either pretreatment; GABA increased significantly only with pentetrazol; alanine increased and arginine decreased only with pentetrazol. In untreated animals, glutamic acid, GABA, and alanine decreased.

In patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, both focused attention and open monitoring meditation increased interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) density compared to story listening, but not compared to classical music listening. The relationship between IED density and perceived meditation depth changed across meditative levels, indicating a dynamic interplay between neural excitability and subjective meditative engagement. This exploratory study provides intracranial evidence that meditation can transiently modulate epileptic network dynamics in meditation-naïve epilepsy patients, suggesting a functional coupling between meditative states and cortical excitability.

Dream Recall Frequency in Epilepsy Patients with Partial and Generalized Seizures: A Dream Diary Study

Patients with complex partial seizures (CPSs) recall dreams about twice as often as patients with generalized seizures, regardless of which side of the temporal lobe the epileptic focus is on, the presence of a visible brain lesion, or whether a seizure occurred the previous day. Nearly all medicated epilepsy patients in the study could recall dreams, but CPS patients showed a significantly higher dream recall frequency than reported in earlier work. The finding supports the idea that temporoparietal areas of both hemispheres contribute to dream production and recall.
