Therapeutics Uses of Psychedelics in patients with psychiatric disorders A Systematic Review

Psychedelic substances such as LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, ayahuasca, and MDMA act on 5-HT2A receptors in the brain, producing changes in consciousness, perception, mood, and behavior. Their effects vary by dose and setting, leading to both positive and negative experiences. A systematic review of 10 articles following PRISMA 2020 guidelines examined the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of these serotonergic psychedelics for psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and cancer-related existential distress. Evidence from pilot studies and randomized controlled trials indicates that psychedelics can improve symptoms, though debate continues over which theoretical models best explain their role in psychiatry.
