Theological Approaches to Comparative Mysticism

State University of New York Press eBooks December 1, 2021

This book chapter examines theological approaches to comparative mysticism, arguing that comparative study of mystical traditions requires careful attention to the theological commitments embedded within each tradition. The author contends that scholars must balance respect for the particularity of each tradition's claims with the goal of cross-cultural understanding. The chapter surveys major methodological debates, including whether a universal core of mystical experience exists or whether experiences are shaped by their religious and cultural contexts. It proposes that comparative mysticism benefits from acknowledging the normative theological frameworks that inform mystical texts and practices, rather than attempting to neutralize them.
