Phencyclidine-like discriminative effects of opioids in the rat.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics September 1, 1980 S. Holtzman

Possible commonalities in the discriminative stimulus properties of phencyclidine (PCP) and opioids were investigated in rats trained to discriminate between i.p. injections of saline and 2.0 mg/kg of PCP in a two-choice discrete-trial avoidance paradigm. Behavior was considered to be under stimulus control when a rat reliably completed at least 18 trials of a 20-trial session on the...

The effects of lysergic acid diethylamide and mescaline-derived hallucinogens on sensory-integrative function: tactile startle.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics December 1, 1978 Mark A. Geyer, Lyle R. Petersen, Gary J. Rose et al. 69 citations

Tactile startle responding by male Sprague-Dawley rats given 60 presentations of air-puff stimuli (37.5 psi) was measured after the intraperitoneal administration of graded doses of hallucinogens and other psychoactive drugs. Among the drugs tested were the indoleamine-derived compounds, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), N,N-dimethyltryptamine and psilocin, and the phenylethylamine-derived...

Disposition of 14C-mescaline by rabbit lung.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics February 1, 1977 Robert A. Roth, Jan Roth, C. N. Gillis 17 citations

Metabolism of mescaline by several rabbit tissues was examined in vitro. Mescaline-oxidizing activity (micromoles per milligram of protein/15 min) of lung homogenates was 4 times greater than that of either liver or kidney. Brain and plasma each had comparatively little capacity to metabolize mescaline. Mescaline metabolism in vitro was sensitive to inhibition by semicarbazide. Removal of...

Tolerance and limited cross-tolerance to the effects of N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and lysergic acid diethylamide-25 (LSD) on food-rewarded bar pressing in the rat.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics June 1, 1976 Beverly Kovacic, E. F. Domino 33 citations

Lysergic acid diethylamide=25 (LSD) and N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) abolish food-rewarded, fixed-ratio bar pressing by rats in a dose-related fashion. Adult male Holtzman rats trained to press a bar (respond) for milk reward on a 4-response fixed-ratio schedule were given i.p. injections of 3.2 or 10 mg/kg of DMT every 2 hours for 21 days. Every 24 hours the animals were placed in operant...

Effects of chlorimipramine and lysergic acid diethylamide on efflux of precursor-formed 3-H-serotonin: correlations with serotonergic impulse flow.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics June 1, 1975 D. Gallager, George K. Aghajanian 83 citations

The effects of d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and chlorimipramine (CIMI) on the firing rate of serotonergic (5-HT) neurons and on the in vivo efflux of 5-HT were investigated in parallel. A cerebroventricular perfusing technique was used to measure the efflux of 3-H-5-HT formed in vivo from 3-H-tryptophan. Impulse flow in serotonergic neurons was monitored by single unit recording from...

METABOLIC FATE OF β-(3,4-DIMETHOXYPHENYL)-ETHYLAMINE IN MAN

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics February 1, 1967 Kyriakos Charalampous, L. Tansey

The metabolism of C 14 -labeled β-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethylamine (DMPEA), reported to be present in the urine of several patients with mental disorders, was studied in man after oral administration. The cumulative excretion of radioactivity in the urine and the concentration of the radioactive material in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid were determined. Unchanged DMPEA,...

METABOLIC FATE OF ν-(3, 4, 5-TRIMETHOXYPHENYL)-ETHYLAMINE (MESCALINE) IN HUMANS: ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF 3,4, 5-TRIMETHOXYPHENYLACETIC ACID

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics August 1, 1964 Kyriakos Charalampous, A. Orengo, K. Walker et al.

Human subjects given labeled β-(3,4 ,5-trimethoxyphyphenyl) -ethylanoine by mouth excrete an average of 81.9% of the administered dose in the urine during the first 12 hours. An average of 26.2% of the administered dose is excreted in the urine as free TMPA. TMPA given to humans by mouth produces no physiological or psychological changes.

Effects of LSD-25 on brain serotonin.

Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics November 1, 1961 D. X. Freedman

LSD-25 in doses of 130 to 1300 µg/kg induced a small and significant rise in levels of rat brain serotonin within 10 to 120 minutes following administration. A single dose was as effective as several daily doses. In reserpine treated animals, LSD-25 induced a 2-fold elevation in brain serotonin, and effects were found 96 hours following a single dose of LSD-25. A dose-effect interaction of...
