Yoga as a Complementary Therapy for Cancer Patients: From Clinical Observations to Biochemical Mechanisms.

Yoga therapy, as a complementary treatment for cancer patients, improves quality of life by reducing stress, enhancing heart rate variability, and altering hormonal regulation (e.g., lowering cortisol), oxidative stress, and inflammation. However, direct evidence for yoga's effect on tumor response or overall survival is lacking. This narrative review details findings from randomized clinical trials on yoga's biochemical mechanisms, but concludes that the biochemical effects on the cancer disease itself remain unknown, calling for more research.

Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as a Nondrug Preventive Intervention in Patients with Migraine: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analyses.

A systematic review of four randomized controlled trials (275 patients) examined whether mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) helps adults with migraine. For migraine frequency, the meta-analysis of three studies found no statistically significant benefit from MBSR. For depressive symptoms, a meta-analysis of three studies showed a statistically significant benefit favoring MBSR. No study measured headache intensity during an attack. The evidence is currently insufficient to recommend MBSR as a non-drug preventive treatment for migraine; further high-quality trials are needed.

Yoga Nidra and Pain: A between-, within-Group Meta-Analysis and Dose Response Meta-Regression

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 studies with 1,176 participants found that yoga nidra (YGN) significantly reduced pain compared to passive control conditions (Hedge's g: -2.05, p = 0.01), but not compared to active comparators (g: -0.31, p = 0.53). Within-group analyses showed significant pain reduction following YGN (g: -2.01, p < 0.001). No significant dose-response relationship was observed across intervention durations. The authors caution that low methodological quality across included studies may produce inflated estimates, and they call for high-quality, standardized research to establish YGN's efficacy as a complementary pain management approach.

Skin Conductance Feedback Meditation: Evaluation of a Novel Physiology-Assisted Meditation Style

A novel meditation method using real-time skin conductance feedback (SCFM) was tested against ordinary mindfulness meditation (MM) in 30 participants (15 experts, 15 non-meditators) over 6 sessions in 3 days. After SCFM sessions, 78.3% felt more integrated and connected, 84.2% more calm and balanced, and 50% vitalized, while 5% or fewer felt agitated or depressed. SCFM was not significantly different from MM. The positive effect of SCFM correlated positively with mindfulness self-ratings. The method appears viable for satisfying, consciousness-expanding meditation.
