This stylistic analysis examines how stream of consciousness and interior monologue unify in selected extracts from Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! and Ginsberg's "Howl." The study identifies three techniques—linguistic, narrative, and metaleptic—that connect these narrative modes. It argues that the rigorous, ambiguous style of both works involves readers in resolving their meaning, and that these techniques reveal a hidden dark side of American life. The study claims to be the first to analyze this problematic style in these works.
