Many psychiatrists encounter patients whose symptoms include disorders or alterations of consciousness, yet the meaning of the term 'consciousness' remains unclear. This article systematically reviews several meanings attributed to the term and associated philosophical problems. It reconstructs various philosophical and scientific theories of consciousness, identifying their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, it offers suggestions for using the term 'consciousness' in psychiatry.
