Pregnancy-related hormonal changes can cause anxiety, which if untreated may lead to preterm birth. This quasi-experimental study tested mindfulness meditation for reducing anxiety in 40 third-trimester pregnant women. Twenty women received mindfulness meditation and 20 received deep-breathing techniques, each over four sessions. Anxiety was measured with the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale. In the mindfulness group, before the intervention 13 women had moderate anxiety and 7 had severe anxiety; afterward, 12 had mild anxiety, 8 had moderate anxiety, and none had severe anxiety. In the control group, anxiety increased: before, 11 had moderate and 9 had mild anxiety; afterward, 11 had moderate, 6 mild, and 3 severe anxiety. The analysis showed a significant reduction in anxiety with mindfulness meditation, indicating it is effective for managing childbirth-related anxiety.
