Complications in discourses on near-death experiences

نشریه پژوهش‌های زبان‌شناسی September 17, 2024 Shima Solati, Ali Izanloo, Azam Estaji

Complications in Farsi near-death experience (NDE) discourse fall into three categories: exemplifying (secondary topics clarifying the main topic), potentializing (secondary topics that could become main topics), and emphasis/scrutinizing (including synonyms, repetitions, antonyms, and overlapping words). Comparing 50 liars and 50 NDE experiencers from the TV program 'Life after Life', liars produced fewer complications overall, while experiencers produced more. Except for potentializing and synonyms, statistical differences emerged between the groups. This suggests complications may serve as a verbal cue distinguishing truthful NDE accounts from fabricated ones.
