Dissociative identity disorder (DID) involves a pathological level of the dissociative mechanism present in every individual, characterized by a splitting of identity, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors into separate parts called 'identity states' or 'alters.' This causes severe disruptions in self-perception, memory, consciousness, and connection with the environment. DID offers strong dramatic material because it directly relates to character, contains internal good-evil conflict, and is linked to trauma, making it a prominent film subject worldwide, especially in Hollywood. However, individuals diagnosed with DID are often portrayed as dangerous monsters.
