Mixed Methods Study on The Impact of Coloring Mandalas on Emotional Regulation, Mindfulness, and Attachment Style in Adults

January 1, 2025 Rachel Faas

Coloring pre-drawn mandalas may improve emotional regulation, increase mindfulness, and even shift attachment states toward greater security in adults. In a mixed methods study, participants completed a mandala coloring intervention and took pre- and post-assessments of emotional regulation, mindfulness, and attachment style, along with qualitative interviews. Results suggest the activity promotes adaptive emotional regulation and mindfulness, with preliminary evidence of movement toward more secure attachment. These findings support the use of mindfulness-based art therapy techniques in both clinical and non-clinical settings, especially for people with attachment difficulties or trauma histories, and help validate adult coloring as a low-cost, low-barrier mental health tool.
