The scope of unconscious processing remains hotly debated, driven by diverse methods for manipulating and measuring perceptual awareness. Through dialogue among researchers with varied theoretical backgrounds, ten recommendations and nine outstanding issues are provided for designing experimental paradigms, analyzing data, and reporting results. These guidelines aim to evoke discussion about norms in studying unconscious processes and help researchers make informed decisions. While some recommendations may not align with existing approaches and will likely evolve, they are intended to foster a more convergent understanding of the extent and limits of unconscious processing.
Even when people's minds wander while listening to an audiobook, their brains continue to predict upcoming words. In 25 participants listening to over 12,000 words of an audiobook, mind-wandering reduced early brain responses to word onsets and altered EEG spectral patterns, but neural markers of word-level surprise and semantic content remained intact. The brain's encoding of predictive context persisted during mind-wandering, though weaker than during attentive listening. This suggests that the brain predicts and monitors speech even when subjective experience is dimmed, indicating that shared computational mechanisms with language models are insufficient for conscious experience of meaning.
When people view a steady, unchanging image, the brain's sensory regions maintain a stable representation of what is being seen, even as overall neural activity changes over time. In contrast, frontal and parietal brain areas only represent the image's content briefly at the moment it first appears. These findings, based on intracranial recordings from ten people with epilepsy, suggest that sustained conscious perception may depend on sensory cortex, while discrete perceptual updates may rely on frontoparietal regions.
