MUSIC AND THE FLOW STATE
Review of Artistic Education April 1, 2024 D. Iușcă
This review examines the relationship between music and the flow state, a condition of complete absorption in an activity where action and consciousness merge, often accompanied by a distorted sense of time. The authors argue that flow arises when a task's challenge matches a person's skill and requires high concentration. They contend that musical activities—such as performance, composition, and education—frequently induce flow, and they propose that this optimal state is important for achieving excellence in music. The paper synthesizes recent research to highlight how flow contributes to musical mastery.
