The Application of Sufi Values to Overcome Academic Stress Among University Students
Educatia. June 25, 2026 Muhamad Danish, Arif Wibowo
This paper argues that Sufi (tasawuf) values can serve as a holistic spiritual coping mechanism for academic stress among university students, particularly in Indonesia. Using a library research method with a descriptive qualitative approach, the authors review literature across Sufism, Islamic counseling, and modern psychology. They propose a synthesized model linking core Sufi values—tawakkul, dhikr, muhasabah, and sabar—with psychological coping mechanisms. The authors contend that tawakkul acts as a psychological buffer against academic pressure, dhikr promotes neurological and emotional relaxation, and muhasabah facilitates structured self-reflection akin to cognitive restructuring. They conclude that Sufism offers a practical psychological tool for sustaining students' mental equilibrium and academic motivation.
