Teaching embodied methods to art therapy students
May 28, 2026 Mia de Béthune, Christina A. Grosso
Integrating embodiment into art therapy graduate training is essential, yet current pedagogy lacks sufficient instruction, forcing therapists to seek supplementary training. The authors propose four pillars for teaching embodied art therapy: teaching grounding and self-regulation techniques (mindfulness, breath work, pendulation, titration, self-touch); providing psycho-education on the nervous system and body regulation (Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Experiencing, Focusing, biofeedback, the Expressive Therapies Continuum); supporting students' exploration of embodiment through creative processing, responsive art making, and attunement exercises; and teaching embodied art therapy methods (Guided Imagery, Guided Drawing, Polarity Drawing). The chapter advocates for wider incorporation of this framework into art therapy curricula.
