Effects of Mindfulness-Based Interventions on Self-compassion in Health Care Professionals: a Meta-analysis

Mindfulness March 5, 2020 Rachel S. Wasson, Clare L Barratt, W. O’Brien

A meta-analysis of 28 studies found that mindfulness-based interventions moderately improve self-compassion among health care professionals and trainees. The effect was moderate from before to after treatment (g = .61) and strong from before treatment to follow-up (g = .76). Interventions that included a retreat component showed stronger effects. The authors suggest these programs may help reduce burnout and compassion fatigue, but call for more rigorous studies to confirm the findings and explore what factors influence outcomes.
