Understanding light: the contemplative pedagogy of Edith Stein
CUADERNOS DE PENSAMIENTO December 5, 2025 Michele Kueter Petersen
Edith Stein's philosophy offers a framework for religious pedagogy that transforms passive reception of faith into an active, contemplative act of 'transformative transcendence.' The article argues that Stein's thought cultivates a 'great-souled moral force' and a new Enlightenment centered on relational truth rather than external facts. Her approach integrates contemplation and action, teaching that learning to 'see with the eyes of faith' involves both intellectual rigor and spiritual vigor. Stein's pedagogy of the heart guides individuals to discern their vocation and moral purpose through the interplay of being, becoming, education, and spirituality.
