Altered parasympathetic activity during sleep and emotionally arousing wakefulness in frequent nightmare recallers

People who frequently recall nightmares show signs of dysfunctional parasympathetic regulation during sleep and in response to emotional distress. Compared to healthy controls, nightmare recallers had higher heart rates during sleep segments (pre-REM, REM, post-REM, and slow wave sleep), but not during resting wakefulness, suggesting autonomic dysregulation specific to sleep. Heart rate variability did not differ significantly between groups during sleep, implying that parasympathetic changes may depend on nightmare severity. During an emotion-evoking picture-rating task designed to model nightmare experiences, nightmare recallers showed increased heart rate and reduced heart rate variability, indicating disrupted emotion regulation under acute distress. These findings point to both trait-like autonomic changes during sleep and state-like responses to emotional challenges.

Daily Predictors of Psychotic‐Like Experiences in Older Adults: The Role of Sleep Quality, Negative Emotions, and Cognitive Failures

In older adults aged 50-79, poorer subjective sleep quality is linked to more psychotic-like experiences the next day, and this relationship is mediated by negative emotions during the morning and in dreams. Over a 7-day home-based study with 72 participants, those who reported worse sleep quality also reported more subclinical psychotic symptoms the following day, with negative emotions playing a key mediating role. Higher subjective cognitive failures and lower IQ were also associated with more psychotic-like experiences, while objective sleep measures showed no connection. The findings suggest that sleep, emotions, and cognitive function together contribute to daytime psychotic-like experiences in older adults.
