Finding flow: Cultivating flow states as a counterpoint to depressive rumination.

Clinical Psychology Science and Practice April 16, 2026 Henrietta Roberts, Nicholas J. Moberly, Katie Wood et al.

Flow—the enjoyable experience of being fully absorbed in an activity matched to one's skills—may serve as an emotion regulation strategy that counteracts depressive rumination. Rumination involves repetitive negative thinking about oneself and is a key risk factor for depression, often triggered by perceived unsatisfactory goal progress. Flow arises when goals are well aligned with abilities, providing a contrasting experience. This narrative review proposes that cultivating flow can reduce susceptibility to rumination by shifting attentional, affective, motivational, and behavioral mechanisms. Evidence suggests flow increases positive emotion, decreases negative emotion, and may be uniquely beneficial for treating rumination and depression.
