POLITICAL SHAMANS IN A FOUCAULDIAN PERSPECTIVE: HOW SHAMANS REMAIN PRESENT IN POLITICAL CONTESTATION

Shamans continue to serve as political consultants during village-head elections in Pangro Village, Central Java, despite the influence of modernity. The article uses Foucauldian analysis to examine how discourse supports the rationality of political shamans, showing that modern reasoning has not eliminated shamanism but transformed it so mystical reasoning coexists with modern logic. Genealogical tracking reveals that the rapid flow of modernity transforms rather than erases shamanic rationality. Archaeological search of knowledge shows traces supporting shamans remain dominant in community culture, giving them a strong place in beliefs, especially for village communities and election candidates. The study concludes that mystical rationality is sustained by citizen knowledge maintained continuously in local culture.
